The 1880 Census for Saratoga County, New York, has William Frazier, 76, widower, living in the residence of George D. Story, whose occupation is listed as “Keeper of Poor House.” From what I’ve found in researching this, the “Poor House” is not as bad as it sounds. Some poor houses were farms run by disposessed landowners. This might have been a good home for a blind 76-year-old who was all alone.
